Gender Gaps Narrowing in STEM Careers
STEM Careers, or those involving Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics, are jobs that have been traditionally held by men. Over time, more organizations and educational institutions have given more incentives for women to join the field. Many groups are also providing startup incentives for women who have an entrepreneurial spirit.
With the increased number of women taking more of the available jobs, the gender gap between men and women is decreasing drastically in most states for STEM-related jobs. Rhode Island and Delaware are among the states with the smallest gender gap. Each state has only 2.6 men for every woman working. While the majority of the country is displaying ratios similar to Rhode Island and Delaware, a few states still stand out with abnormally high ratios of men to women. Idaho and Utah both currently have over four men for every woman working in STEM jobs.
With the higher wage offered with these types of jobs, many women are seeing the benefit of having to spend less time in the workforce. This is allowing more women to change careers later in life, and even plan for an early retirement. With most of the jobs only requiring a Bachelor’s degree, the time to enter the field is less than other jobs with similar pay. The shorter time spent in school also helps cut down on student loans, which means less time paying off loans and more time investing for future goals.
